What are bank shopping portals and how do they work?
Every major Indian bank operates a shopping portal — a webpage that links to popular e-commerce and travel sites. When you click through the bank portal to a merchant and complete a purchase, the portal earns a referral commission from the merchant and shares part of it with you as bonus reward points on top of your card's base reward rate.
The compounding effect is significant. HDFC SmartBuy can push HDFC Diners Black from its 3.33% base rate to an effective 16.67% on travel spends — without any additional card, any code, or any higher spend. The portal is the mechanism that unlocks these headline rates.
HDFC SmartBuy — the most powerful portal in India
Who it's for: HDFC credit card holders, especially Diners Club Black, Infinia, and Regalia owners.
How it works: Log into HDFC NetBanking or the SmartBuy app. Browse merchants. Click through to the merchant's site. Complete your purchase using the same HDFC credit card. Bonus reward points credit within 90 days of purchase (after the return window closes).
Best rates: Diners Club Black earns 10x reward points on SmartBuy flight and hotel bookings — equivalent to roughly 13.3% value. HDFC Regalia earns 5x. For non-Diners cards, SmartBuy still adds 2-5% extra on most merchants.
Common pitfall: The SmartBuy tracking cookie must survive from when you click the portal link to when you complete payment. Opening Amazon in a separate tab, using an ad blocker, or switching browsers will break the tracking and forfeit the bonus points. Always complete the purchase in the same browser session that started from SmartBuy.
Axis Gift Edge (formerly Axis Rewards)
Who it's for: Axis Bank credit card holders, particularly Axis Magnus and Axis ACE users.
How it works: Access via Axis mobile app or internet banking. The portal offers gift vouchers, travel bookings, and merchant links. For Axis Magnus holders, milestone-linked EDGE Miles are most valuable when redeemed via the portal for business class air tickets.
Best use case: Axis Magnus earns 12 EDGE Miles per ₹200 on travel via Gift Edge. At peak redemption value of ₹2 per EDGE Mile for business class bookings, this is a 12% return — one of the best in the premium card segment.
ICICI iShop
Who it's for: ICICI credit card holders, especially Amazon Pay ICICI card users.
How it works: Access via ICICI internet banking or the dedicated iShop URL. Click through to merchants to earn bonus ICICI PayBack points or cashback on top of card rewards.
Best stacking opportunity: Amazon Pay ICICI already earns 5% on Amazon. Using ICICI iShop to click through to Amazon can add a further 2-3% in PayBack points, pushing total returns to 7-8% on select sale periods.
SBI SimplyCLICK and SBI SmartFM
Who it's for: SBI credit card holders, particularly SimplyCLICK and SBI Card Elite users.
How it works: SBI SimplyCLICK card gives 10x points on Amazon, BookMyShow, Cleartrip, Domino's, and partner portals — a ₹100 spend earns 10 reward points at ₹0.25 each = effective 2.5% return at minimum. Combined with the SBI SmartFM portal for travel, Elite cardholders can earn up to 5x on flight bookings.
Four rules to never lose portal bonus points
Rule 1 — One tab, one session: Never open the merchant site in another tab. Click from the portal and complete the purchase in that same tab without going back to the portal.
Rule 2 — Disable ad blockers: uBlock Origin, AdGuard, and similar extensions intercept the tracking pixel that confirms your session. Whitelist the bank portal domain or use a separate browser profile for portal purchases.
Rule 3 — Do not use merchant coupons unless verified: Many portals exclude bonus points if a coupon code is applied at checkout — unless the portal itself offers that code. Check the merchant's terms on the portal page.
Rule 4 — Check your statement at 90 days: Portal points typically credit 90-120 days after purchase (after the return window closes). Set a reminder. If points have not appeared, you have a limited window to raise a dispute with the bank.
Which portal gives the most value?
HDFC SmartBuy is the most valuable portal in absolute terms, particularly for Diners Club Black and Infinia holders booking flights and hotels. If you hold one of those cards, SmartBuy alone can justify the annual fee. For mid-tier cards, the portals add 1-3% on top of base rewards — still worth using for any purchase above ₹5,000.
The marginal effort is near zero: bookmark your bank's portal, make it the starting point for any online purchase above ₹2,000, and collect the bonus points passively. Over a year of typical household spending, portal bonuses can easily add ₹3,000-8,000 in rewards that would otherwise be left unclaimed.
